Learning in Action: Pleasant Hill Elementary

In the latest Learning in Action, Board President Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, Ph.D., visited Pleasant Hill Elementary School to see Safety Patrol, where student leaders serve in different roles before and after school to help ensure a safe and innovative learning environment for their fellow Huskies during drop-off and dismissal each day.

Total Solar Eclipse Blazes #1LISD with Excitement

Every #1LISD student and staff had the opportunity to gaze up at the sky and watch as the moon passed between the sun and earth April 8. Many campuses welcomed families to join spectator events planned for this special occasion. A unique educational opportunity for Leander ISD, classes embraced this teachable moment, integrating it into curriculum and offering students a chance to learn about the science behind this rare phenomenon.

Trio of Soccer Playoff Runs End in State Semis

Three Leander ISD teams reached the UIL Soccer State Tournament April 11–12 in Georgetown.

The Rouse High School girls soccer team drew Wakeland High School to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation and overtime before losing in penalty kicks. The Glenn and Vandegrift high school boys soccer teams both dropped their semifinals match 2–0 to Wakeland and Flower Mound high schools, respectively.

Congratulations to all three teams on incredible seasons!

LISD Bands Selected as Featured Performing Ensembles at the Midwest Clinic

The Cedar Park MS Band, Wiley MS Band, Rouse HS Band and Vandegrift HS Percussion Ensemble have all been selected as featured performing ensembles at The Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference, which will be held Dec. 18–21 in Chicago.

“Selection for performance at The Midwest Clinic is a substantial achievement for any high school or middle school program. Having four groups perform in the same year from our school district is truly outstanding!” Director of Fine Arts and Music and Performing Arts Mike Howard said. “I am proud to have these students represent their school, Leander ISD and the State of Texas at this international event in Chicago.”

Culinary Students Chop Up Competition at ProStart State Event

Leander ISD students from the district’s two high schools with culinary programs – Cedar Park and Glenn high schools – showcased their talent and skills at the ProStart state competition put on by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation March 8–10 in Waco.

Glenn’s Kimora Cargill took the top prize in the “Design on the Fly” category. Glenn HS also had a pair of second-place finishers with Ethan Nguyen in “Couscous” and Amara Cooper in “Pastry Skills.” Glenn’s Nguyen and Jennifer Wallace picked up third place in “Spiced” and “Set the Table,” respectively, while the Lone Star Culinary category featured a third-place finish from the Cedar Park’s team of Dylan Garcia, Anastacia Decuir, Lyn Dye, Mia Matthews and Olive Hart.

CTE Students Excel at TAFE State Competition

Leander ISD aspiring teachers could be found at the top of a variety of categories during the Texas Association of Future Educators state competition Feb. 28–March 1 in Round Rock.

Two first-place finishes – Vista Ridge High School’s Isabella Fedorov in Lesson Planning & Delivery (STEM) and Glenn High School’s Jasmine Schlinger in Educational Leadership Fundamentals (ELF) Test – led the way, along with two gold awards: Vista’s Emilia Prado & Abigail Durbiano in Breakout Session and Durbiano for Portfolio.

VRHS students also picked up Top 3 finishes in four other categories: Maggie Bryson in Lesson Planning & Delivery (Arts); Federov in Differentiated Lesson; and Reagan Wise in both Public Speaking and Educators Rising Moment.

In total, 12 LISD students will advance to compete at the national level June 27–July 1 in Washington, D.C.

CTE Corner: Transportation, Distribution & Logistics

Leander ISD Career and Technical Education students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and certifications within the field of Transportation, Distribution and Logistics.

In the Automotive Program of Study at Rouse High School, students study automotive basics and automotive technology, and eventually complete a practicum in transportation systems.

“If I didn’t have this program, I wouldn’t feel really prepared for my future plans – I want to be a BMW technician,” Glenn High School student Javier Peña said. “And the fact that there’s a program out there in this district that [prepares students] is just amazing.”

Rouse Student Wins Car from Local Honda Dealership

Rouse High School Senior Colton Rube got an early graduation present from Honda Leander – a 2024 Honda Civic!

For the third year in a row, Honda Leander hosted a car giveaway for graduating Leander ISD students. 261 LISD seniors turned in an entry form, and principals randomly selected 20 entries from each campus to be entered in the official drawing. Last year’s winner, Evan Turner, came to do the drawing.

Spring Booster Club Training

All booster clubs are welcome to attend Leander ISD’s Spring Booster Club Training Wednesday, April 24 at the LEO Center (300 S. West Dr. Leander) at 6 p.m.

At least one booster club representative must attend one training per school year.

Austin Community College to Offer Free Tuition Starting with Class of 2024 Grads

Austin Community College District recently approved a pilot program to offer FREE college tuition and general fees to all high school graduates and GED completers who live in the ACC service area – that means all students zoned to Leander ISD are eligible.

The ACC Free Tuition pilot program starts with the class of 2024. It will continue for all future classes in subsequent years for the next five years. There are no income restrictions and no GPA requirements.

“In LISD, we have a goal of ensuring equitable access to opportunities,” said Superintendent Bruce Gearing, Ed.D. “It’s fantastic when our community partners share the same vision of eliminating barriers for students pursuing options once they leave our system.”

On the Street: Celebrate Diversity Month

Chief of the Office of Educational Access DeWayne Street invited Vandegrift High School Principal Charlie Little to speak about his journey and the significance of Celebrate Diversity Month.

This On the Street: A #1LISD Journey podcast series serves as an opportunity to continue the conversation around educational access and to highlight our efforts around increasing cultural competency for Leander ISD staff. Our work is about bringing people into the conversation.

Human Sexuality Curriculum for 2023–24 Offered with Opt-In

In Leander ISD, students in Grades 7–9 are taught Human Sexuality Curriculum through presentations by LifeGuard, an independent organization.

LISD believes that sexuality education begins at home. Parents or legal guardians are the primary educators of their children and can be the most important influence on your child’s health decisions. The lessons your child will receive in school are designed to reinforce what a parent or legal guardian is teaching at home, not to replace it.

During the 87th Texas Legislation, Texas House Bill 1525 was adopted that requires parents or legal guardians to opt-in their students to participate in Human Sexuality curriculum.

Appreciation Week: Librarians

Leander ISD celebrated Librarian Appreciation Week alongside National Library Week from April 8-12.

The mission of LISD librarians is to lead their school communities in an environment that challenges students to imagine possibilities, explore opportunities and connect with the future and the world.

“School Librarians have a unique role on campus in that we are teachers, but from a student perspective we are zero-risk adults who don’t impact their grades but provide help when asked and provide a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment,” Vista Ridge High School Librarian Melokka Spittler said.

Culture of Voting: Upcoming May Elections

During this busy time of year, it’s important to not lose sight of upcoming elections this spring. 

Be informed. Be a voter.

The municipal election day is Saturday, May 4. While it’s true that cities and school districts have different jurisdictions, we both have a common interest in the safety, wellness and the vitality of our communities for future generations. 

There is one other May election date to have on your calendar as a handful of primary elections head to run-off Tuesday, May 28. These races – happening all across the state – will have an impact on public education.

Voting is not just a civic duty, it’s a powerful way to shape our future. Get registered, be informed and become a voter.

Save a Life: Bleeding Control Training for Students

When lawmakers pass House Bill 496 in 2019, it mandated every school in LISD will have a bleeding control kit, or trauma kit. You can find these kits in each automated external defibrillator AEDs on every campus. Certain staff members will get special training on how to use them as required.

The law also says that Texas school districts need to offer bleeding control training to students in grades 7–12. We’re organizing some voluntary training sessions for our students. Each session can take up to 100 7th-12th-grade students from each LISD feeder pattern.

If you’re interested, please pre-register for the training. That helps us ensure better instructor/student ratios. We encourage you to select the training at the high school your child is zoned to attend.

Senior Walks Set for Class of 2024 Graduates

Senior walks for the Leander ISD Class of 2024 will be held across elementary campuses May 22-23. These walks allow graduating seniors to reconnect with the elementary campus where they began their education, and inspire current elementary students who get to see a glimpse of their own futures.

Dual Language Program Accepting Applications for 2024-25

The Dual Language Application for 2024–2025 for incoming kindergarten students is available now. Applications must be turned in to LISD, online, in person or via mail by Friday, May 3, 2024, at 5 p.m. to be considered for the program. Applications received after May 3, 2024, may be placed on a waitlist.

Through the district’s Dual Language program, students maintain their first language while adding a second language, and they develop pride in their own language and culture while developing an understanding of the cultures and traditions of others. Leander ISD offers both two-way (for Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students) and one-way (for Spanish-speaking students) approaches.

Community Information Nights for interested families will be available through April. The next one will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Whitestone Elementary.

Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF)

LEEF-funded Initiatives Showcased at VHS

Last week, the LEEF Board of Directors learned at its monthly meeting about two amazing LEEF-funded initiatives at Vandegrift High School. 🎉 

First, they engaged with ACCELeratoredu students, who shared insights into launching their businesses and how the program has influenced their academic journey and future aspirations. LEEF funds $25,000 annually for all Uncharted Learning curriculum districtwide – FreshINC at 15 elementary schools; mxINC at all 9 middle schools; and INCubator at Vandegrift and Vista Ridge high schools. 💙💰💛

Next, they were greeted by Sharon McCollister’s students who took coffee orders, made the drinks, and collected $1 at their own Viper Café. ☕ These students learn essential job development skills, including marketing, taking orders, inventory, finances, customer service. Our Leander ISD students are absolutely amazing and you should be sure to watch this video with highlights. The $5,000 collaborative grant from LEEF is fulfilling a need for our students by bringing them real-world experiences to the classroom. 🤩

El eclipse solar total llena de emoción a #1LISD 

Todos los estudiantes y el personal de #1LISD tuvieron la oportunidad de contemplar el cielo y ver como la luna pasaba entre el sol y la tierra el 8 de abril. Muchas escuelas dieron la bienvenida a las familias a unirse a los acontecimiento para los espectadores previsto para esta ocasión especial. Una oportunidad educativa única para Leander ISD, las clases abrazaron este momento de enseñanza, integrándolo en el plan de estudios y ofreciendo a los estudiantes la oportunidad de aprender sobre la ciencia detrás de este raro fenómeno.

Un trío de equipos de fútbol se clasifica para las semifinales estatales

Tres equipos de Leander ISD llegaron al Torneo Estatal de Fútbol UIL el 11 y 12 de abril en Georgetown.

El equipo de fútbol femenino de Rouse High School empató sin goles con Wakeland High School al final del tiempo reglamentario y de tiempo extra antes de perder en tiros penales. Los equipos de fútbol de Glenn y Vandegrift perdieron sus partidos de semifinales 2-0 contra Wakeland y Flower Mound, respectivamente.

Los estudiantes de Leander ISD de las dos escuelas preparatorias del distrito con programas culinarios – las escuelas preparatorias Cedar Park y Glenn – mostraron su talento y habilidades en la competencia estatal ProStart organizada por la Fundación Educativa de la Asociación Nacional de Restaurantes del 8 al 10 de marzo en Waco.

Glenn HS también tuvo un par de segundos lugares con Ethan Nguyen en “Couscous” y Amara Cooper en “Habilidades de repostería”. Nguyen y Jennifer Wallace de Glenn obtuvieron el tercer puesto en ” Condimentado” y “Poner la mesa”, respectivamente, mientras que la categoría Culinaria Lone Star contó con un tercer puesto del equipo de Cedar Park de Dylan García, Anastacia Decuir, Lyn Dye, Mia Matthews y Olive Hart.

Los aspirantes a maestros de Leander ISD fueron encontrados en la cima de una variedad de categorías durante la competencia estatal de la Asociación de Futuros Educadores de Texas del 28 de febrero al 1 de marzo en Round Rock.

Dos primeros lugares – Isabella Fedorov de la Preparatoria Vista Ridge en Planeación y Entrega de Lecciones (STEM) y Jasmine Schlinger de la Preparatoria Glenn en Fundamentos de Liderazgo Educacional (ELF) – lideraron el camino, junto con dos premios de oro: Emilia Prado y Abigail Durbiano de Vista en Sesión de grupo y Durbiano en Portafolio.

Los estudiantes VRHS también ganaron Top 3 en otras cuatro categorías: Maggie Bryson en Planificación de Lecciones y Entrega (Artes); Federov en Lección Diferenciada; y Reagan Wise tanto en Hablar en Público y Educadores Momento Rising.

En total, 12 estudiantes de LISD pasarán a competir a nivel nacional del 27 de junio al 1 de julio en Washington, D.C.

Rincón CTE: Transporte, distribución y logística

Los estudiantes de Educación Técnica y Profesional de Leander ISD tienen la oportunidad de obtener experiencia práctica y certificaciones dentro del campo de Transporte, Distribución y Logística.

En el Programa de Estudio Automotriz en Rouse High School, los estudiantes estudian los fundamentos y la tecnología automotriz, y eventualmente completan una práctica en sistemas de transporte.

“Si no tuviera este programa, no me sentiría realmente preparado para mis planes futuros: quiero ser técnico de BMW”, dijo Javier Peña, estudiante de Glenn High School. “Y el hecho de que haya un programa en este distrito que [prepara a los estudiantes] es simplemente increíble”.

Un estudiante de Rouse gana un coche del concesionario Honda local

Colton Rube, estudiante de último año de Rouse High School, recibió un regalo de graduación anticipado de Honda Leander: ¡un Honda Civic 2024!

Por tercer año consecutivo, Honda Leander organizó un sorteo de automóviles para los estudiantes que se gradúan de Leander ISD. 261 estudiantes de último año de LISD entregaron un formulario de inscripción, y los directores seleccionaron al azar 20 solicitudes de cada escuela para participar en el sorteo oficial. El ganador del año pasado, Evan Turner, vino a hacer el sorteo.

Capacitación de primavera del Booster Club

Austin Community College ofrecerá matrícula gratuita a partir de la clase de graduados 2024 

El Distrito de Austin Community College aprobó recientemente un programa piloto para ofrecer matrícula universitaria GRATUITA y cuotas generales a todos los graduados de preparatoria y a quienes completen el GED que vivan en el área de servicio de ACC – eso significa que todos los estudiantes zonificados a Leander ISD son elegibles.

El programa piloto de matrícula gratuita de ACC comienza con la clase de 2024. Continuará para todas las clases futuras en los años subsiguientes durante los próximos cinco años. No hay restricciones de ingresos y no hay requisitos de GPA.

Currículo de Sexualidad Humana para 2023-24 Ofrecido con participación voluntaria

En Leander ISD, a los estudiantes de los grados 7 al 9 se les enseña el Currículo de Sexualidad Humana a través de presentaciones de LifeGuard, una organización independiente.

LISD cree que la educación sexual comienza en casa. Los padres o tutores legales son los principales educadores de sus hijos y pueden ser la influencia más importante en las decisiones de salud de su hijo. Las lecciones que su hijo recibirá en la escuela están diseñadas para reforzar lo que los padres o tutores legales enseñan en casa, no para sustituirlo.

Durante la Legislatura 87 de Texas, se adoptó el Proyecto de Ley 1525 de la Cámara de Texas que requiere que los padres o tutores legales opten por que sus estudiantes participen en el plan de estudios de Sexualidad Humana.

Semana de agradecimiento: Bibliotecarias/os

Leander ISD celebró la Semana de Apreciación del Bibliotecario junto con la Semana Nacional de la Biblioteca del 8 al 12 de abril.

La misión de los bibliotecarios de LISD es guiar a sus comunidades escolares en un ambiente que desafía a los estudiantes a imaginar posibilidades, explorar oportunidades y conectarse con el futuro y el mundo.

“Los bibliotecarios escolares tienen un papel único en la escuela, ya que somos maestros, pero desde la perspectiva de los estudiantes somos adultos de riesgo cero que no afectan sus calificaciones, sino que proporcionan ayuda cuando se les pide y proporcionan un ambiente seguro, acogedor e inclusivo”, dijo Melokka Spittler, bibliotecaria de Vista Ridge High School.

Cultura de votación: Próximas elecciones de mayo

En esta época del año tan ajetreada, es importante no perder de vista las próximas elecciones de primavera.

El día de las elecciones municipales es el sábado 4 de mayo. Si bien es cierto que las ciudades y los distritos escolares tienen jurisdicciones diferentes, ambos tenemos un interés común en la seguridad, el bienestar y la vitalidad de nuestras comunidades para las futuras generaciones.

Hay otra fecha de las elecciones de mayo a tener en su calendario como un número de elecciones primarias se dirigen a la segunda vuelta el martes, 28 de mayo. Estas elecciones – que se celebran en todo el estado – tendrán un impacto en la educación pública.

Votar no es sólo un deber cívico, es una forma poderosa de dar forma a nuestro futuro. Inscríbase, infórmese y conviértase en votante.

Salvar una vida: capacitación para estudiantes sobre el control de hemorragias

Cuando los legisladores aprobaron el proyecto de ley 496 de la Cámara en 2019, ordenó que cada escuela en LISD tuviera un kit de control de hemorragias, o kit de trauma. Usted puede encontrar estos kits en cada desfibrilador externo automatizado AEDs en cada escuela. Ciertos miembros del personal recibirán capacitación especial sobre cómo usarlos según sea necesario.

La ley también dice que los distritos escolares de Texas tienen que ofrecer capacitación en control de hemorragias a los estudiantes de 7º a 12º grado. Estamos organizando sesiones de capacitación voluntarias para nuestros estudiantes. Cada sesión puede tomar hasta 100 estudiantes de 7º a 12º grado de cada zona de asistencia de LISD.

Si usted está interesado, regístrese previamente para la capacitación. Eso nos ayuda a asegurar una mejor proporción instructor/estudiante. Le animamos a seleccionar la capacitación en la escuela preparatoria de su hijo está zonificado para asistir.

Caminatas de los estudiantes por graduarse de la clase 2024

Las caminatas para la Clase de 2024 de Leander ISD se llevarán a cabo en las escuelas primarias el 22 y 23 de mayo. Estas caminatas permiten a los estudiantes que se gradúan reconectarse con la escuela primaria donde comenzaron su educación, e inspirar a los estudiantes de primaria actuales que llegan a ver un anticipo de su propio futuro.

El Programa de Lenguaje Dual acepta solicitudes para 2024-25

La solicitud de Lenguaje Dual para 2024-2025 para estudiantes de nuevo ingreso a kindergarten ya está disponible. Las solicitudes deben entregarse a LISD, en línea, en persona o por correo antes del viernes, 3 de mayo de 2024, a las 5 p.m. para ser considerado para el programa. Las solicitudes recibidas después del 3 de mayo de 2024, pueden ser colocadas en una lista de espera.

A través del Programa de Lenguaje Dual del distrito, los estudiantes mantienen su primer idioma mientras añaden un segundo idioma, y desarrollan orgullo en su propio idioma y cultura mientras desarrollan un entendimiento de las culturas y tradiciones de otros. Leander ISD ofrece programas bidireccionales (para estudiantes hispanohablantes y anglohablantes) y unidireccionales (para estudiantes hispanohablantes).

Fundación para la Excelencia Educativa de Leander (LEEF)

Iniciativas financiadas por LEEF se exhiben en VHS

La semana pasada, la Junta Directiva de LEEF se enteró en su reunión mensual de dos increíbles iniciativas financiadas por LEEF en Vandegrift High School. 🎉

En primer lugar, se comprometieron con los estudiantes ACCELeratoredu, que compartieron ideas sobre el lanzamiento de sus negocios y cómo el programa ha influido en su trayectoria académica y las aspiraciones futuras. LEEF financia anualmente $25,000 para todo el plan de estudios de Uncharted Learning en todo el distrito – FreshINC en 15 escuelas primarias; mxINC en las 9 escuelas intermedias; e INCubator en las escuelas secundarias Vandegrift y Vista Ridge. 💙💰💛

Después, los alumnos de Sharon McCollister les dieron la bienvenida y tomaron los pedidos de café, prepararon las bebidas y recaudaron 1 dólar en su propio Viper Café. ☕ Estos estudiantes aprenden habilidades esenciales para el desarrollo laboral, incluyendo marketing, tomar pedidos, inventario, finanzas, servicio al cliente.
