Leander ISD schools and facilities will remain closed Tuesday, Jan. 27, due to continued icy conditions, dangerous wind chill temperatures, and unsafe travel concerns across our area. After-school activities (practices, rehearsals, games, event) will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis should conditions improve. Additional guidance will come from your coach or program director.
We made this decision after consultation with emergency response agencies, facilities and transportation staff, and local officials.
While no new precipitation is forecasted, temperatures across our district are not expected to rise above freezing until late Tuesday morning, limiting our ability to safely open facilities and run transportation across our large district.
Any ice that melted during the day is expected to re-freeze overnight, further compounding already hazardous conditions for our early-morning bus routes and employees reporting before sunrise. Temperature forecasts show that even a delayed start would not provide enough time for the sun to significantly change that situation in the morning.
Many major roads are beginning to clear. At the same time, our district covers more than 200 square miles, and several of our suburban and rural neighborhoods remain inaccessible. After assessing our campuses, our facilities team shared that while half of our campuses are in good shape, the schools on the western half face icy sidewalks and parking lots, making travel difficult at best for walkers, car-riders and drivers.
Our thanks go out to the district’s facilities and operations crews for their continued work in assessing the condition of our buildings.
We anticipate a safe return to normal operations on Wednesday. The district will share another update with families no later than 6 p.m. Tuesday.
We know this extended closure can be hard for families and staff, and we appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we prioritize safety.

Precautions
Remember to protect the four “Ps” – people, pets, pipes, and plants – from cold weather. And if you have to go outside, dress in layers, protect exposed skin and ensure your home and vehicles are winter-ready.
The district will continue to monitor the lingering weather effects and receive updates from the National Weather Service. For the most up-to-date information, please return to this page or follow us on social media.
