As the holiday season approaches, families across our community are preparing to celebrate with loved ones. While this is a time of joy and togetherness, it is also important to prioritize safety, especially when it comes to gun ownership.
In 2019, 3,683 deaths in Texas were due to firearms, higher than the national rate. This number has risen every year since 2011. By educating the public about safe gun storage, we can reduce the risks to better protect the citizens of Texas.
During the 87th Legislative Session, the Texas legislature appropriated to the Department of Public Safety $500,000 over the next two fiscal years (2022/23) to establish and promote a statewide safe gun storage campaign.
Due to the increased presence of guests in homes during the holidays, we urge all gun owners to practice responsible and safe gun storage. Proper storage not only protects your family but also prevents unauthorized access to firearms.
Key Safe Gun Storage Tips
- Use a Secure Storage Method. Store firearms in a locked safe, cabinet, or lockbox. Ensure that the storage device is inaccessible to children and unauthorized individuals.
- Keep Ammunition Separate. Store ammunition in a separate locked location from firearms. This adds an additional layer of safety.
- Educate Family Members. Discuss the importance of gun safety with all family members, including children. Teach them that guns should only be handled by adults and that they should always treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
- Be Cautious with Guests. If you are hosting guests, especially those with children, consider temporarily removing firearms from the home or ensuring they are securely stored.
- Utilize Safety Devices. Invest in gun locks and safety devices that provide additional security for your firearms.
- Regularly Review Storage Practices. Periodically assess your storage methods to ensure they remain effective and compliant with safety standards.
