The Leander ISD Board of Trustees approved the district’s annual Hazardous Routes recommendations for the 2026–27 school year, following a yearly review of walking routes for students who live within 2 miles of their assigned campus.
Students living within 2 miles of school are considered part of the Not Eligible for Transportation Zone (NET Zone). Under Texas law, districts are required to provide bus transportation only for students living more than 2 miles from their assigned campus. Students inside the NET Zone receive bus service only if their walking route is determined to be hazardous using a Board-approved, community-developed safety matrix.
That matrix evaluates factors such as major roadway crossings without controls, roads with speed limits above 45 mph and railroad crossings. Each year, transportation staff review routes impacted by construction, development, rezoning and community feedback to determine whether conditions still qualify for hazardous route transportation.
For the 2026–27 review, families were invited to submit feedback between Jan. 14 and Feb. 1. All responses were reviewed and considered as part of the evaluation process.
What’s Changing for 2026–27
As a result of this process, some areas will remain designated “Hazardous”, while several other areas will transition from hazardous route status back to standard NET Zone eligibility due to improved conditions, such as: completed construction, new sidewalks, improved crossings and updated traffic controls. [Neighborhood Code (NBCD) Look-up]
Bus Service Continues (Remains Hazardous):
- Cypress Elementary — NBCD 2430
- Giddens Elementary — NBCDs 4900 / 4905
- Camacho Elementary (east of West Street) — NBCD 4400
*These areas continue to qualify for transportation due to ongoing construction activity, commercial traffic patterns and roadway safety concerns.
Transitioning to NET Zone (Bus Service Ends):
- Camacho Elementary / Leander Middle School — NBCDs 4615 / 4225 / 4300
- Cypress Elementary (Twin Creeks / Bella Vista) — NBCDs 3080 / 3085 / 3075
- Mason Elementary (Whitestone Preserve) — NBCD 4650
- Hisle Elementary — NBCDs 3930 / 3980
- Leander High School — NBCD 4500
- Leander Middle School feeder areas — NBCDs 4600 / 4610
- Cedar Park Middle School / Cedar Park High School — NBCDs 2225 / 2200
*These routes no longer meet the hazardous route threshold due to conditions, such as: safer walking paths, new sidewalks, traffic signals and controlled crossings.
Special Case Transition
- Westside Elementary (Faubion transition area) — NBCDs 2000 / 2010
*As part of the Faubion Elementary transition, these areas will remain in the NET Zone for 2026–27, with a crossing guard added at Buttercup Creek Boulevard and Lakeline Boulevard.
Reviewed Due to Community Feedback (No Change)
- Rouse High School / Wiley Middle School
Cold Springs / Crystal Springs / Hazelwood south of Crystal Falls
NBCDs 1670 / 1675 / 1680
*After review, this area will remain in the NET Zone, as safe walking paths and controlled crossings are already in place.
Additional Transportation Notes
The new Faubion School for Early Childhood’s NET Zone will mirror Plain Elementary’s current NET Zone. Students will board buses at their home campuses, and transportation will not operate inside the NET Zones of feeder campuses.
Important Note: Transportation services provided through a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) are not impacted by these changes.
