SCENARIO A | SCENARIO A SURVEY
The Leander ISD Board of Trustees is reviewing elementary school attendance zones for the 2021–22 school year and the opening of Tarvin Elementary School. The Board approved a charter at its Feb. 27 meeting, outlining priorities for district administration to use when developing scenarios.
At this time, the district is presenting its first scenario – Scenario A – along with a corresponding survey of Scenario A. The survey closes Friday, March 13.
The information below details how Scenario A aligns to the charter:
- School Size: Opens Tarvin Elementary with an efficient enrollment
- School Size: Provides some crowding relief at Parkside Elementary
- School Size: Provides some crowding relief at Akin Elementary
- School Size: The district identified two large blocks of students – Cold Springs/Hazlewood (249 elementary students) and Vista Oaks (272 elementary students) – one of which needed to be rezoned to provide relief for Akin Elementary.
- Proximity: When providing relief to Akin, NBCDs 1675 (Cold Springs) & 1680 (Hazlewood) had a closer alternative school with capacity (Pleasant Hill Elementary) than NBCDs 1400 and 1425 (Vista Oaks) had as an alternative school (Reagan Elementary).
- Minimize Change: Moving NBCDs 1400 and 1425 impacts more schools and neighborhood codes in relieving Parkside and Akin while also not crowding another school. For instance, moving Vista Oaks to Reagan Elementary would require rezoning NBCD 1805 (Silver Oak) and other codes from Reagan Elementary to Cox Elementary. Note: Part of NBCD 1805 touches the Reagan Elementary property line.
- School Size: Adjusts NBCDs south of RR 1431, west of Lakeline Boulevard (NBCDs 3200 and 3300) from Mason Elementary to Deer Creek Elementary (175 students). This relieves Mason Elementary for a number of years.
- School Size: This allows us to delay the opening of an elementary school in Travisso and to more quickly address capacity needs at Reagan and Rutledge Elementary (Ranch of Brushy Creek site).
- Feeder Pattern: Aligns feeder pattern with Cedar Park MS and Cedar Park HS
Continuing to address Minimize Change
This scenario in the 2021–22 Elementary School Attendance Zoning process – Scenario A – does contain neighborhood codes that were rezoned by the 2020–21 middle school zoning. Knowing this, the district does look at how a scenario impacts individual students.
Here are the three examples of when a student of NBCD 1675 or 1680 was rezoned multiple times:
- A student in the graduating class of 2028 (kindergarten in 2016) was rezoned from Pleasant Hill Elementary to Akin Elementary in 2017. That student, based on this scenario, would be a 5th-grade student in 2021 and rezoned from Akin Elementary to Pleasant Hill Elementary.
However, historically the Board has adopted transfer exceptions to allow for an incoming 5th-grade student who is rezoned, along with their siblings, to remain at their current campus. This helps alleviate situations where families would be split between two campuses at the same level. With the new transfer process, this would allow those siblings to remain at that campus without having to reapply each year. - A student in the graduating class of 2025 (3rd grade in 2016) was rezoned from Pleasant Hill Elementary to Akin Elementary in 2017. That student (6th grade in 2019) will be rezoned from Stiles Middle School to Wiley Middle School in 2020.
- A student in the graduating class of 2024 (4th grade in 2016) was rezoned from Pleasant Hill Elementary to Akin Elementary in 2017. Per adopted transfer exceptions referenced in Example 1, that student could have applied for a transfer to remain at Pleasant Hill Elementary for their 5th-grade year. That student (7th grade in 2019) will be rezoned from Stiles MS to Wiley MS in 2020. Per adopted transfer exceptions referenced in Example 1, that student could apply to remain at Stiles MS for their 8th-grade year.
