Spotlight on Learning: Plain ES

Students and staff from Plain Elementary shared how empowerment and ownership of learning are shaping their classroom experiences.

Across grade levels, students described being encouraged to ask questions, explain their thinking, collaborate with peers and learn from mistakes. From hands-on science and math problem-solving to writing and creative projects, Plain students are taking an active role in their learning and supporting one another along the way.

Student Performance Data Shows Strong Year-Over-Year Progress

Trustees reviewed a set of interconnected data and accountability updates that together provide a mid-year check-in on student learning as well as historical context from prior years. The discussion highlighted encouraging signs of progress already emerging this school year, while also grounding that progress within longer-term accountability measures.

Leading Measures highlight significant gains

Leading Measures Elementary Math

🎬 9.A.2. Discussion of Leading Measures for 2025-2026

Trustees reviewed Leading Measures data to better understand how students are progressing this year using tools such as Amira (reading) and NWEA MAP (math and literacy). Compared to the same point last year, data show significant year-over-year improvement in both growth and proficiency across grade levels.

Administrators emphasized that Leading Measures allow the district to monitor progress in real time, identify areas for targeted support and make instructional adjustments well before end-of-year accountability results are available. Trustees noted that these gains reflect continued alignment around curriculum, instruction and professional learning.

TAPR STAAR District Comparison

🎬 5.A. 2024-2025 District Annual Report of the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) and Public Hearing

Trustees also reviewed the annual Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), which reflects statewide accountability data from the 2024–25 school year. While TAPR looks back at prior performance, leaders noted its value in providing historical context for current trends and ongoing improvement efforts.

HB 3 goals updated to reflect progress and future targets

HB3 Early Childhood Reading Goals

🎬 9.A.1. Consider Approval of 2025-2029 House Bill 3 (HB3) Goals

Trustees approved updated reading and math goals required under House Bill 3 from the 2019’s 86th Legislative Session. The revised goals reflect updated baselines, increased targets for student groups and the district’s ongoing focus on improving outcomes and closing achievement gaps over time.

Board Approves Faubion Attendance Rezoning for 2026-27 & Provides Choice for Families

Faubion Rezoning Scenario B

🎬 9.C.2. Discussion & Consider Approval of Elementary School Attendance Zoning for Kindergarten–5th Grade Students Currently Zoned to Faubion Elementary for the 2026–2027 School Year

Trustees approved Scenario B for elementary attendance zoning beginning in the 2026–27 school year for students currently zoned to Faubion Elementary.

As previously shared, Faubion Elementary will close at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Under the approved zoning plan, students will transition to Westside Elementary or Reed Elementary, aligning elementary boundaries with existing middle school feeder patterns and supporting long-term continuity for students.

The selected scenario reflects community feedback, prioritizing feeder alignment and balanced enrollments while maintaining flexibility for current Faubion families through the district’s transfer process for them to go to either of the considered options.

District staff will continue working with Faubion, Reed and Westside leadership teams on transition planning. Families directly impacted by the rezoning will receive additional communication outlining next steps and available options as implementation moves forward.

🎬 Closed Session Discussion

After careful consideration, the Board will move forward with an internal search for the district’s next superintendent. The position posted Friday.

Board members said the decision reflects a focus on continuity in learning and district culture, while building on the work already happening across Leander ISD. Trustees emphasized that an internal search recognizes and supports the leadership currently serving students, staff and families.

“We have strong confidence in the District’s internal leadership pipeline. That is what we do – grow leaders,” Board President Anna Smith said. “Limiting the search internally creates an opportunity to identify the right fit while maintaining stability during an important time for the District.”
