Leander ISD continues to provide support in the coordinated response to flooding in the Sandy Creek area. In partnership with the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM), the district is facilitating the site for a volunteer reception center at Plain Elementary. The center will serve as the central hub for registering, organizing and transporting volunteers to active recovery zones. More than 13,000 volunteers across Texas have mobilized to support families with urgent needs during this crisis.

“In moments like these, we see the true heart of our community,” said Superintendent Bruce Gearing, Ed.D. “It’s truly an honor to see neighbors come together and support one another through service, supplies and hope. We are incredibly grateful to provide our emergency management partners with the space they need to do this important work.”

The announcement was made Monday during a press conference with Governor Greg Abbott following a briefing with emergency responders at the primary incident command center at Hisle Elementary School.

What the Volunteer Reception Center Does

The district has received numerous inquiries about how to help. The Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) is a place to start. This coordination hub will provide a space where agencies can work together to match volunteers with the greatest needs in the field.

The VRC will be open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Individuals wishing to volunteer in the Sandy Creek area must first register in person.
  • Upon registration, volunteers will be matched with a service opportunity.
  • LISD Transportation Services will provide shuttles to and from the Sandy Creek area for registered volunteers.
  • There are no hands-on volunteer opportunities at Plain Elementary.

Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) is serving as the lead agency for volunteer coordination. Community members interested in volunteering or donating resources can find more information at www.adrn.org.

When volunteers arrive at Plain Elementary, please enter the rear of the building. The VRC will take place in the cafeteria. These maps show where to park and where to go.
