Leander ISD is proud to announce that Vandegrift High School has been named the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2024-25 Lone Star Cup Champion for Conference 6A. The UIL Lone Star Cup recognizes the top-performing high schools in the state based on overall excellence in academics, athletics, and fine arts.
“Winning the prestigious 6A Lone Star Cup is the ultimate recognition of excellence across all facets of our school — academics, athletics, and extracurriculars,” said Drew Sanders, athletic coordinator and head football coach at Vandegrift HS. “To be named the best 6A high school in the state of Texas is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unity of our students, staff, and community.”
Throughout the school year, Vandegrift teams consistently excelled at the district and state level, earning points across a wide range of competitions. The school earned 122 points overall, highlighted by state championships in football, boys soccer, and FIRST robotics.
Lone Star Cup Points Breakdown:
- Team Tennis: 6 points
- Boys Cross Country: 8 points (🥈 State Runner-Up)
- Marching Band: 12 points (🥈 State Runner-Up)
- Volleyball: 12 points
- Football: 18 points (🥇 State Champion)
- Spirit: 1 point
- Boys Swimming: 6 points (🥉 State Bronze Medalist)
- Girls Basketball: 6 points
- Boys Basketball: 4 points
- FIRST Robotics: 13 points (🥇 State Champion)
- Boys Soccer: 16 points (🥇 State Champion)
- Girls Soccer: 10 points
- Girls Golf: 8 points (🥈 State Runner-Up)
- Baseball: 2 points
“This award reflects not just one team’s success, but the strength of an entire school and community committed to greatness in every arena,” Sanders said. “Thank you to all who contributed to this achievement.”
The UIL Lone Star Cup trophy will be officially presented to Vandegrift High School during a home football game this fall. This marks Vandegrift’s first Lone Star Cup victory at the 6A level. The Vipers previously earned back-to-back Lone Star Cups in 2014-15 and 2015-16 while competing in Conference 5A.
“Leander ISD is a district where excellence is not a goal, it is the standard,” said Becky Craig, LISD director of athletics. “Our high school programs exemplify what Leander ISD values, by the dedication of the student competitors and the leadership of our coaches, program directors and advisors.”
LISD also celebrates Cedar Park High School, which tied for third place in the 5A Lone Star Cup standings this year. Cedar Park earned state titles in marching band, FIRST robotics, and girls soccer, showcasing the district’s continued excellence across all schools and programs.
