Welcome back, #1LISD! We are thrilled to once again see our halls filled with smiling faces as we embark on a new year of learning and growing together. In this issue of The Compass, check out sights and sounds from the first day of school and celebrations of student and staff accolades.

📸 A Look Around #1LISD – The First Day of School

What an incredible first day of school in #1LISD! There was plenty of excitement (and some nerves too) as more than 43,000 students and 5,500 employees headed back into their classrooms and offices for the new school year. 

We can’t wait to see how all of our staff and students demonstrate kindness, intelligence and courage in the coming months!

🗓 Upcoming Events

#1LISD Rallies Around Families Affected by Cedar Park Fire

The #1LISD Family extends our sympathies to those in the Bexley apartment complex in Cedar Park who were affected by the fire. Our schools immediately began making contact with their families to see how best they could help those in need. In total, more than 75 LISD families, along with two employees, live in this apartment complex. Ten were in affected buildings and four experienced a total loss.

Thank you to the Red Cross, Hill Country Bible Church, Hill Country Community Ministries, the PTA Clothes Closet and all who stepped up to support families through this challenging time. And a special thank you to the Cedar Park Fire Department, Cedar Park Police Department, the 20 other agencies who responded in support, along with the Cedar Park mayor and city manager who all did an incredible job of mitigating the damage of this fire.

Wildfire Prevention

To help prevent wildfires, the Texas A&M Forest Service asks the community to do the following: 

• Obey local fire restrictions and avoid burning if it is hot, dry or windy.
• Operate equipment and vehicles safely. Do not drag tow chains and watch for sparks
• Do your part and don’t let a wildfire start.

And to reduce the risk from wildfires:

• Property accessible to first-responders and house number visible
• Create a Go Kit and evacuation plan with two-plus escape routes
• Avoid outdoor activities that may cause a spark
• Consider fire-resistant landscaping
• Consider fire-resistant home construction

Hot Weather Guidelines

Fresh air and exercise are an important part of the school day. Time spent outdoors gives students the opportunity to engage in activities that allow them to relax from the structure of the classroom for a short period of time. It is difficult to set guidelines that fit every circumstance and condition in regard to outside activity during hot weather. Leander ISD has created the following set of guidelines for use when modifying school recess, other outdoor physical activity or physical education.

Note: Principals have final discretion to determine the criteria for such decisions regarding safety of outdoor activity on a day-to-day basis.

RHS Graduate Earns National ‘Best Actor’ Award

We are thrilled to congratulate Rouse High School’s Langston Lee, winner of the prestigious Best Actor award at The Jimmy Awards, the National High School Theatre Awards. Lee performed in Rouse’s production of Anastasia this past school year and received Best Actor at the Heller Awards for Young Artists for his stunning portrayal of Dmitry.

Lee will attend The Juilliard School for acting, starting this fall.

Henry Middle School Band Named State Champion at TMEA Honor Band Competition

At the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor Band State Finals competition held July 19-20, the Henry Middle School band placed 1st in the Middle School 3C Classification and was named State Champion Honor Band. The Henry band will go on to perform at the TMEA State Convention in San Antonio this coming school year. 

The Cedar Park High School, Rouse High School, Canyon Ridge Middle School and Cedar Park Middle School bands also had the honor of participating in the competition, advancing to the State Finals round and placing in the top 10 concert bands in the state in their respective classifications.

Vista Ridge’s Wendell Mills Named TASSP Region 13 High School Assistant Principal of the Year

Vista Ridge High School Assistant Principal Wendell Mills has been named the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) Region 13 High School Assistant Principal of the Year.

“Wendell Mills is a true difference maker. He is an outstanding role model who passionately serves and connects with all Vista Ridge stakeholders,” Vista Ridge Principal Paul Johnson said. “We are grateful he came to the Ridge and we congratulate him on being named Region 13 Assistant Principal of the Year!”

Westside Recertified as Lighthouse School

Westside Elementary School has been recertified as a Lighthouse School by the Leader in Me program, a prestigious honor and continued evidence of Westside’s accomplishments since their original certification in 2019.

The Lighthouse Recertification Review is an assessment process for schools to reflect and celebrate their accomplishments since receiving their original Lighthouse Certification. To earn Lighthouse Certification, schools must demonstrate growth and innovation within The Leader in Me Framework, be evaluated by certified Franklin Covey reviewers and implement a continuous process of school improvement.

🚌 Bus Route Information & SMART Tag

The Leander ISD Transportation Department uses SMART Tag – a system that provides accurate, near real-time monitoring of where and when students load onto and unload off of their school bus – to help promote student safety and security, keeping parents, school administrators and the district’s transportation department more informed.

Returning bus riders are asked to continue to use the SMART Tag card they were issued last year. If they do not have a card, the student will punch in using their lunch number (student ID) when getting on and off the bus. Bus drivers will begin to issue cards in September for new bus riders.

The online parent portal allows parents and guardians to register to receive alerts for when the bus will arrive at their child’s stop; see a live map of their child’s bus; and view a riding history for their child. Be sure to register if you have never done so.

Infofinder

On the Infofinder website, Leander ISD parents can enter their home address to look up their child’s bus route number, pick-up/drop-off times, and bus stop locations for the 2023–24 school year. Bus routes are subject to change, so LISD parents are strongly encouraged to confirm their child’s bus information again the week prior to the start of school.

Fall Booster Club Training

Calling all booster clubs! We would like to invite you to our Booster Club training at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the LEO Conference Center. It is a requirement that at least one leader per booster club attend each school year. All booster clubs are welcome to attend.

PSAT / NMSQT for Homeschooled Students

Leander ISD offers a PSAT testing opportunity for homeschooled students who live in the LISD attendance zone. Students in grades 10 and 11 are invited to take the College Board’s PSAT test Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at Leander High School (3301 S Bagdad, Leander, TX 78641) or Vandegrift High School (9500 McNeil Dr., Austin, TX 78750).

Registration is online and must be submitted by Sept. 8, 2023, to allow for testing materials to be ordered. 

LISD’s District Advisory Committee Application Window is Now Open

Leander ISD invites our community to support our students and teachers by volunteering on a district-wide or campus-based committee.

To apply for one of our district advisory committees, please complete the application by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug 18. The open committees include: 

• Community-Based Accountability System Committee (CBAS)
• Community Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC)
• District-wide Educational Improvement Council (DWEIC)
• School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)

To apply for the Site-Based Planning Committee, please contact the school your child attends.* 

Board Meeting Updates

The next regularly scheduled Board Meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 24, at Concordia University. The meetings are also available through live-stream on our Board of Trustees webpage. Meeting agenda packets are available online within 72 hours of the meeting.

Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF)

LEEF Awards $100k+ in Grants to LISD Teachers & Staff

Last week, LEEF joined Leander ISD to Welcome Back staff at Convocation. LEEF awarded 33 grants totaling more than $118,000, impacting more than 31,000 Leander ISD students. 

Here are just a few of the great programs and projects that received funding: 

• Viper Cafe led by our special education students
• Makerspaces
• Books
• STEM and math initiatives
• Funding for our bus transportation department to improve training new bus drivers

Green Chile Fest: Eat at Blue Corn Harvest to Benefit LEEF

Welcome back, Leander ISD students and families!

Visit any of the three Blue Corn Harvest locations from Aug. 15–Sept. 14 and order from their limited time only Green Chile Fest menu. Not only will you be giving $1 back to Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF), you skip cooking dinner AND support a local restaurant! 

Funds received from the giveback will help LEEF continue to make an impact in Leander ISD classrooms – working toward a mission to enrich the educational experience for all.

Convocation 2023 Feedback

Flu Vaccine Clinic

Leander ISD has partnered with H-E-B to host flu vaccine clinics at various locations across the districts from Sept. 5 through Oct. 3.

View the schedule to find the sign-up form for a specific time slot.

Once signed up, be sure to bring a driver’s license and your LISD medical insurance card. There is no cost of employees enrolled in LISD medical insurance. For those not enrolled, the cost is $36 – cash or check only.

Culture Day

At the beginning of the month, the district welcomed its brand-new teachers and staff with an afternoon of learning about the culture of continuous improvement, mission of #1LISD, and how it’s different here.

Learning Unleashed

Check out the first edition of Learning Unleashed for the 2023-24 school year. This newsletter is designed to keep #1LISD continually growing and improving by connecting us to just-in-time ideas, content, and resources aligned to our Learning Model and guiding philosophies.

This issue includes content on the learning environment, curriculum connections, advice for new teachers, tech tips and much more.

Annual Compliance Videos Available Now

The annual compliance training videos are available in the Safe Schools/Vector Solutions platform if you would like to get a head start on completing them before the school year begins.

Here are a few details about the process:

• You will need to log into your Google Account to view presentations: accounts.google.com
• This year we are offering compliance and other trainings on the SafeSchools website.
• Make sure you log in by clicking on your Leander ISD Google account.
• The LISD Help Desk staff will be happy to support any issues you may have when viewing courses from an LISD computer but cannot support issues that occur on your home computer.
• Need assistance with SafeSchools? Check out the tip sheet on how to navigate the site.

🗓 Próximos eventos

#1LISD se une a las familias afectadas por el incendio de Cedar 

La Familia #1LISD extiende su solidaridad a aquellos en el complejo de apartamentos Bexley en Cedar Park que fueron afectados por el incendio. Nuestras escuelas inmediatamente comenzaron a ponerse en contacto con sus familias para ver la mejor manera de ayudar a los necesitados. En total, más de 75 familias de LISD, junto con dos empleados, viven en este complejo de apartamentos. Diez estaban en edificios afectados y cuatro sufrieron una pérdida total.

Gracias a la Cruz Roja, Hill Country Bible Church, Hill Country Community Ministries, la PTA Clothes Closet y todos los que se unieron para apoyar a las familias a través de este momento difícil. Y un agradecimiento especial al Departamento de Bomberos de Cedar Park, el Departamento de Policía de Cedar Park, las otras 20 agencias que respondieron en apoyo, junto con el alcalde de Cedar Park y el administrador de la ciudad que todos hicieron un trabajo increíble para mitigar los daños de este incendio.

Prevención de incendios forestales

Para ayudar a prevenir los incendios forestales, el Servicio Forestal de Texas A&M pide a la comunidad que haga lo siguiente: 

• Obedezca las restricciones locales contra incendios y evite quemar si hace calor, está seco o hay viento.
• Utilice los equipos y vehículos de forma segura. No arrastre cadenas de remolque y tenga cuidado con las chispas.
• Ponga de su parte y no deje que se inicie un incendio forestal.

Y para reducir el riesgo de incendios forestales:

• Procure que la propiedad sea accesible a los socorristas y que el número de la casa sea visible
• Prepare un botiquín y un plan de evacuación con más de dos vías de escape
• Evite las actividades al aire libre que puedan provocar una chispa
• Considere la posibilidad de colocar jardines resistentes al fuego
• Considere la construcción de viviendas resistentes a los incendios

Directrices para condiciones climáticas calurosas

El aire fresco y el ejercicio son una parte importante de la jornada escolar. El tiempo que se pasa al aire libre brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de participar en actividades que les permiten relajarse de la estructura del salón de clases durante un breve periodo de tiempo. Es difícil establecer directrices que se adapten a todas las circunstancias y condiciones en lo que respecta a la actividad al aire libre durante el clima cálido. Leander ISD ha creado el siguiente conjunto de directrices para su uso al modificar el recreo escolar, otra actividad física al aire libre o educación física.

La Banda de la Escuela Secundaria Henry es nombrada Campeona Estatal en la Competencia de Bandas de Honor TMEA

En la competencia de las Finales Estatales de la Banda de Honor de la Asociación de Educadores de Música de Texas (TMEA) que se llevó a cabo el 19 y 20 de julio, la banda de la Escuela Secundaria Henry obtuvo el 1er lugar en la Clasificación 3C de la Escuela Secundaria y fue nombrada Banda de Honor Campeona Estatal. La banda de Henry actuará en la Convención Estatal de la TMEA en San Antonio el próximo año escolar. 

Las bandas de Cedar Park High School, Rouse High School, Canyon Ridge Middle School y Cedar Park Middle School también tuvieron el honor de participar en la competencia, avanzando a la ronda final estatal y ubicándose entre las 10 mejores bandas de concierto del estado en sus respectivas clasificaciones.

El subdirector Wendell Mills, de Vista Ridge es nombrado subdirector del año de la Región 13 de TASSP 

El subdirector de la escuela preparatoria Vista Ridge, Wendell Mills, ha sido nombrado subdirector del año de la región 13 de la Asociación de Directores de Escuelas Secundarias de Texas (TASSP, por sus siglas en inglés).

“Wendell Mills marca la diferencia. Es un modelo sobresaliente que sirve con pasión y se conecta con todas las partes interesadas de Vista Ridge”, dijo el director de Vista Ridge, Paul Johnson. “Estamos agradecidos de que haya venido a Vista Ridge y lo felicitamos por haber sido nombrado Subdirector del Año de la Región 13”.

Westside certificada de nuevo como escuela Lighthouse 

La Escuela Primaria Westside recibió de nuevo la certificación Lighthouse School por el programa Líder que hay en mí, un prestigioso honor y una prueba continua de los logros de Westside desde su certificación original en 2019.

La Revisión de la certificación Lighthouse es un proceso de evaluación para que las escuelas reflexionen y celebren sus logros desde que recibieron su Certificación Lighthouse original. Para obtener la certificación Lighthouse, las escuelas deben demostrar crecimiento e innovación dentro del marco “El líder que hay en mí”, ser evaluadas por revisores certificados de Franklin Covey e implementar un proceso continuo de mejora escolar.

🚌 Información sobre las rutas de autobuses y el sistema SMART Tag

El Departamento de Transporte de Leander ISD utiliza SMART Tag – un sistema que permite controlar con precisión y casi en tiempo real dónde y cuándo suben y bajan los estudiantes de sus autobuses escolares, para contribuir a la seguridad de los estudiantes, manteniendo más informados a los padres, a los administradores escolares y al departamento de transporte del distrito.

Se solicita a los estudiantes que retoman el autobús que continúen utilizando la tarjeta SMART Tag que se les expidió el año pasado. Si no tienen una tarjeta, el estudiante marcará su número de almuerzo (identificación del estudiante) cuando suba y baje del autobús. Los conductores comenzarán a emitir tarjetas en septiembre para los nuevos pasajeros.

El portal en línea permite a los padres y tutores registrarse para recibir alertas de cuándo llegará el autobús a la parada de su hijo, ver un mapa en directo del autobús de su hijo y consultar el historial de viajes de su hijo. Asegúrese de registrarse si nunca lo ha hecho.

Infofinder

En la página web de Infofinder, Los padres de Leander ISD pueden ingresar la dirección de su casa para buscar el número de ruta del autobús de su hijo, los horarios para recogerlo/dejarlo y las ubicaciones de las paradas de autobús para el año escolar 2023-24. Las rutas de autobús están sujetas a cambios, por lo que se recomienda a los padres de LISD que confirmen la información del autobús de sus hijos la semana anterior al inicio de clases.

Capacitación de otoño de Booster Club

¡Llamando a todos los Booster Clubs! Nos gustaría invitarle a nuestra capacitación para Booster Club a las 6 p.m. El miércoles, 13 de septiembre, en el Centro de Conferencias LEO Es un requisito que al menos un líder por Booster Club asista cada año escolar. Todos los Booster Clubs son bienvenidos a asistir.

PSAT / NMSQT para estudiantes que son educados en casa 

Leander ISD ofrece una oportunidad de tomar el examen PSAT para los estudiantes que son educados en casa y que viven en la zona de asistencia de LISD. Los estudiantes en los grados 10 y 11 están invitados a tomar el examen PSAT del College Board el martes, 24 de octubre de 2023, en Leander High School (3301 S Bagdad, Leander, TX 78641) o Vandegrift High School (9500 McNeil Dr., Austin, TX 78750).

La inscripción es en línea y debe enviarse antes del 8 de septiembre de 2023, para permitir que se pidan los materiales para las pruebas.

Clínica de vacunas contra la gripe

Leander ISD se ha asociado con H-E-B para organizar clínicas de vacunas contra la gripe en varios lugares de los distritos desde el 5 de septiembre hasta el 3 de octubre.

Ver el horario para consultar el formulario de inscripción de un intervalo de tiempo específico.

Una vez inscrito, asegúrese de traer su licencia de conducir y su tarjeta de seguro médico de LISD. No hay costo para los empleados inscritos en el seguro médico de LISD. Para los que no están inscritos, el costo es de $36 – efectivo o cheque solamente.

Día de cultura

A principios de mes, el distrito dio la bienvenida a sus nuevos maestros y personal con una tarde de aprendizaje sobre la cultura de mejora continua, la misión de #1LISD, y cómo es diferente aquí.

Recordatorio de videos de cumplimiento de normativas
