Take a Bow! Henry MS Theatre Arts Director Honored by TxETA with ‘Exemplary’ Award of Distinction
Henry Middle School Theatre Arts Director Lorri Boyd has achieved the prestigious level of Exemplary for Texas Educational Theatre Association’s (TxETA) Award of Distinction for her excellent direction of the Henry theatre program.
“This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the relentless dedication and hard work exhibited by the entire faculty, staff and students at Artie L. Henry,” TxETA President Travis Springfield said in a letter of congratulations. “[Lorri’s] commitment to excellence and relentless pursuit of academic and extracurricular achievements has undoubtedly set an aspiring example for other educational institutions in the region.”

Register for After-School Enrichment Session 1
After-School Enrichment sessions provide elementary students with the opportunity to explore a variety of extracurricular activities at the end of the school day. These enrichment sessions include art, sports, cooking and more, depending on the campus. Registration for Session 1 ends today, Aug. 30.
Intro to Career and Technical Education in Leander ISD
Do you know someone concerned that public education doesn’t provide students with real-world skills?
In Leander ISD classrooms, students can gain industry experience and certifications through dozens of programs, ranging from construction to applied agriculture engineering to digital communications. Over the past school year, students have been named Video Producer of the Year, finished first internationally for their marketing campaign, been named #1 JROTC company in Navy Area 10 and been awarded $5,000 scholarships from local industry partners – alongside dozens of other accomplishments.
Leander ISD offers an expansive Career and Technical Education Program, in addition to other supported elective opportunities, for high school and middle school students. On the high school level, there are 40 Programs of Study alongside career development and leadership opportunities.

On Wednesday morning, graduates of the Leadership LISD program gathered to reconnect and discuss the ways that they have used their new knowledge of the district in order to get involved and support the community. Riding Out the Heat Wave
With triple-digit temperatures still in the forecast for the foreseeable future, changes to activities during the school day and events after school are possible.
In the last issue of The Compass, we shared Hot Weather Guidelines campuses when modifying school recess and other outdoor activities, while still allowing students to receive as much fresh air and exercise as possible.
As fall sports began hitting full stride, kickoff times for the Aug. 25 games at LISD stadiums were pushed back by 30 minutes in order to play more of the game as the sun went down and the temperature began to drop. In addition to moving back kickoff times when appropriate, our coaches and athletic trainers will work together to utilize other options like shortening quarters, extending halftime and more timeouts to allow for extra hydration. And for our marching bands, students were not uniforms and had access to their individual water jugs full of water at all times.
Be sure to check teams’ and LISD’s social media channels for updates to the schedule as we continue to closely monitor these extreme conditions and make adjustments as necessary.
Fall Booster Club Training
Calling all booster clubs! We would like to invite you to our Booster Club training at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the LEO Conference Center. It is a requirement that at least one leader per booster club attend each school year. All booster clubs are welcome to attend.
📸 Volleypalooza
Top-tier teams from across the nation descended upon LISD’s six high schools last week for the annual Volleypalooza tournament. This event was as packed and exciting as always, and got players and fans psyched for the rest of the volleyball season!
PSAT / NMSQT for Homeschooled Students
Leander ISD offers a PSAT testing opportunity for homeschooled students who live in the LISD attendance zone. Students in grades 10 and 11 are invited to take the College Board’s PSAT test Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at Leander High School (3301 S Bagdad, Leander, TX 78641) or Vandegrift High School (9500 McNeil Dr., Austin, TX 78750).
Registration is online and must be submitted by Sept. 8, 2023, to allow for testing materials to be ordered.
Board Meeting Updates
During its Aug. 24 meeting, the Leander ISD Board of Trustees:
- Lowered the 2023 Property Tax Rate by More Than 16 Cents from the Previous Year
- Discussed House Bill 3’s Safety & Security Requirements
- Approved Architects and Construction Managers for Slate of 2023 Bond Projects
- Discussed the Naming of Elementary School 30 & Other Facilities
- Looked at How the Demographer Develops Enrollment Projects
- Approved a Waiver to Allow HR to Employ Teachers Working Toward Certification Requirements
- Received an Update on Professional Learning in LISD
The next regularly scheduled Board Meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 7, at Concordia University. The meetings are also available through live-stream on our Board of Trustees webpage. Meeting agenda packets are available online within 72 hours of the meeting.

Green Chile Fest: Eat at Blue Corn Harvest to Benefit LEEF
Welcome back, Leander ISD students and families!
Have a busy few weeks ahead with back to school events? We have the solution for you! Visit any of the three Blue Corn Harvest locations from Aug. 15–Sept. 14 and order from their limited time only Green Chile Fest menu. Not only will you be giving $1 back to Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF), you skip cooking dinner AND support a local restaurant!
Funds received from the giveback will help LEEF continue to make an impact in Leander ISD classrooms – working toward a mission to enrich the educational experience for all.

Giving All Leander ISD Students the Opportunity for Career and College Success
Over the past 10 years The Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF) has invested nearly $500,000 to give every Leander ISD student the opportunity to attend college or find the career path that suits them. Part of this investment is funding Advanced Placement (AP) tests and dual-credit textbooks specifically for those students who identified as economically disadvantaged. LEEF has invested $150,000 in these 2 initiatives over the past 10 years and supported over 2,000 high school students.

New Edition of Benefits Buzz
Check out the latest edition of Benefits Buzz, a great resource of Benefits updates and reminders.
Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment for all will be from Oct. 9–27. All employees must re-enroll no matter when you started working with LISD, including new-hires.
During the enrollment window, there will be options to self-enroll on the website; call the Benefits Service Center; visit In-person Labs to meet with an enrollment specialist.
AbsenceSoft Self Service Portal
LISD now has a new self service portal where employees can request a leave of absence under protected leave for eligible reasons or request accommodations.
Bereavement Leave
LISD employees will now receive up to five days of paid bereavement leave upon the death of an immediate family member.

Leander ISD Offers Aspiring School Counselor Program
In an effort to support Leander ISD staff who are interested in becoming school counselors, the LISD Counseling Service Department is offering an Aspiring School Counselor Program beginning Sept. 19.
Leander ISD staff who have completed, are currently enrolled or have been accepted into a school counseling masters program qualify as program candidates. The cohort will meet six times each year, three times a semester, with the goal to support future counselors as they complete their coursework and field experiences. The program will also prepare aspiring school counselors for the specific counseling needs in Leander ISD.
Flu Vaccine Clinic
Leander ISD has partnered with H-E-B to host flu vaccine clinics at various locations across the districts from Sept. 5 through Oct. 3.

Once signed up, be sure to bring a driver’s license and your LISD medical insurance card. There is no cost of employees enrolled in LISD medical insurance. For those not enrolled, the cost is $36 – cash or check only.

¡Un aplauso! La directora de artes escénicas de Henry MS, galardonada por TxETA con el premio “Ejemplar” a la distinción
La Directora de Artes Teatrales de Henry Middle School, Lorri Boyd, ha alcanzado el prestigioso nivel de Ejemplar para el Premio de Distinción de la Asociación de Teatro Educativo de Texas (TxETA) por su excelente dirección del programa de teatro de Henry.
“Este notable logro es un testimonio de la incesante dedicación y el trabajo duro exhibido por toda la facultad, el personal y los estudiantes en Artie L. Introducción a la Educación Técnica y Profesional en LISD

📸 Liderazgo de Embajadores de LISD
El miércoles por la mañana, los graduados del programa de Liderazgo LISD se reunieron para volver a conectar y analizar las formas en que han utilizado su nuevo conocimiento del distrito con el fin de participar y apoyar a la comunidad. ¿Está buscando oportunidades para conectarse, ser voluntario y asociarse con nuestra comunidad #1LISD? Resistiendo la ola de calor
Con temperaturas de tres dígitos todavía en el pronóstico para el futuro cercano, los cambios en las actividades durante el día escolar y los eventos después de la escuela son posibles.
En el pasado número de The Compass, le compartimos las Pautas para el clima caluroso a las escuelas a la hora de modificar el recreo escolar y otras actividades al aire libre, permitiendo al mismo tiempo que los estudiantes reciban la mayor cantidad posible de aire fresco y ejercicio.
A medida que los deportes de otoño comienzan a dar sus primeros pasos, los horarios de los partidos de 25 de agosto en los estadios de LISD se retrasaron 30 minutos para poder jugar más tiempo a medida que el sol se ocultaba y la temperatura empezaba a descender. Además de retrasar la hora de inicio del partido cuando sea necesario, nuestros entrenadores y preparadores físicos trabajarán juntos para utilizar otras opciones, como acortar los cuartos, prolongar el descanso y aumentar los tiempos de descanso para permitir una mayor hidratación. Y para nuestras bandas de música, los estudiantes no llevaban uniforme y tenían acceso a sus botellas individuales llenas de agua en todo momento.
Asegúrese de consultar los canales de medios sociales de los equipos y LISD para las actualizaciones de la programación a medida que continuamos monitoreando de cerca estas condiciones extremas y hacer los ajustes necesarios.
Capacitación de otoño del Booster Club

📸 Volleypalooza
Los mejores equipos de todo el país llegaron a las seis escuelas preparatorias de LISD la semana pasada para el torneo anual Volleypalooza. ¡Este evento estuvo tan lleno y emocionante como siempre, y entusiasmó a jugadores y aficionados para el resto de la temporada de voleibol!
PSAT / NMSQT para estudiantes que son educados en casa
Leander ISD ofrece una oportunidad de tomar el examen PSAT para los estudiantes que son educados en casa y que viven en la zona de asistencia de LISD. Los estudiantes en los grados 10 y 11 están invitados a tomar el examen PSAT del College Board el martes, 24 de octubre de 2023, en Leander High School (3301 S Bagdad, Leander, TX 78641) o Vandegrift High School (9500 McNeil Dr., Austin, TX 78750).
La inscripción es en línea y debe enviarse antes del 8 de septiembre de 2023, para permitir que se pidan los materiales para las pruebas.
Actualizaciones de la Junta Directiva
Durante la reunión del 24 de agosto, la Junta Directiva de Leander ISD:
- Redujo la tasa de impuestos a la propiedad 2023 en más de 16 centavos respecto al año anterior
- Discutió el proyecto de ley 3 de la Cámara de Seguridad y Requisitos de Seguridad
- Aprobó Arquitectos y Gerentes de Construcción para la Lista de Proyectos de Bonos 2023
- Discutió el nombre de la Escuela Primaria 30 y otras instalaciones

- Aprobó una exención para permitir HR para emplear a los maestros que trabajan hacia los requisitos de certificación
- Recibió una actualización sobre el aprendizaje profesional en LISD

Inscripción abierta
La inscripción abierta para todos será del 9 al 27 de octubre. Todos los empleados deben reinscribirse sin importar cuando empezaron a trabajar con LISD, incluyendo los nuevos empleados.
Durante la ventana de inscripción, habrá opciones para autoinscribirse en el sitio web; llamar al Centro de Servicio de Beneficios; visitar laboratorios presenciales para reunirse con un especialista de inscripción.
Portal de autoservicio AbsenceSoft
LISD ahora tiene un nuevo portal de autoservicio donde los empleados pueden solicitar un permiso de ausencia bajo licencia/permiso protegido por razones elegibles o solicitar adaptaciones.
Licencia por duelo/luto
A partir de ahora, los empleados de LISD recibirán hasta cinco días de permiso retribuido por duelo en caso de fallecimiento de un familiar directo.

Leander ISD ofrece un programa para aspirantes a consejeros escolares
En un esfuerzo por apoyar al personal de Leander ISD que están interesados en convertirse en consejeros escolares, el Departamento de Servicios de Consejería LISD está ofreciendo un Programa de Aspirantes a Consejero Escolar a partir del 19 de septiembre.
El personal de Leander ISD que ha completado, está actualmente inscrito o ha sido aceptado en un programa de maestría en consejería escolar califica como candidato al programa. La cohorte se reunirá seis veces al año, tres veces por semestre, con el objetivo de apoyar a los futuros consejeros a medida que completan sus cursos y experiencias de campo. El programa también preparará a los aspirantes a consejeros escolares para las necesidades específicas de asesoramiento en Leander ISD.
Clínica de vacunas contra la gripe
Leander ISD se ha asociado con H-E-B para organizar clínicas de vacunas contra la gripe en varios lugares de los distritos desde el 5 de septiembre hasta el 3 de octubre.
