The Belton ISD Board of Trustees selected Dr. Matthew L. Smith, Leander ISD’s current Chief of Staff, as the Lone Finalist to become their Superintendent. State law requires a 21-day waiting period following the naming of the lone finalist. The Belton ISD Board will vote on the contract for Smith at their regular monthly meeting Feb. 17 and his last day with LISD will be at the end of February.

“I am humbled to be named the Lone Finalist for the Belton ISD superintendent of schools,” said Smith. “BISD has a proud history of doing amazing things for students and I cannot wait to join the team. At the same time I am extremely proud of our students, staff, and leaders in LISD. I know that Dr. Gearing and the Board of Trustees will continue to do amazing things for each and every student in the district. I will always be a proud supporter of their work and look forward to leading alongside them in the future.”

Smith’s career in public education spans more than two decades, including the past three years as the Chief of Staff for Leander ISD.

“Matt has been an indispensable part of our leadership team and has done an outstanding job as our Chief of Staff,” said LISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing. “I want to personally thank Matt for his leadership and wish him well as he starts his new journey in Belton. I look forward to working with Dr. Smith as a peer superintendent.”
