E-bikes are picking up speed in our community. Leander ISD Police Department wants to keep students safe and informed.
E-bikes can reach higher speeds than traditional bicycles, which makes following the rules of the road even more important. Riders should always:
- Wear a helmet.
- Follow traffic laws.
- Stay alert especially near campuses, crosswalks and bus routes.
LIkewise, drivers should:
- Slow down in school zones and neighborhoods.
- Give cyclists space when passing.
- Be extra attentive in school areas, at crosswalks, and along bus routes. A little extra caution goes a long way in preventing accidents.
We also encourage families to talk with their students about safe riding habits, including yielding to pedestrians, avoiding distractions and riding responsibly.
As e-bikes become more common, we’ve been learning alongside many of you, particularly about the different types of bikes and the rules that come with them. E-bikes are legal electric bicycles. Electric dirt bikes, mini motorcycles, and similar motorized bikes are not allowed on public roads or sidewalks. Because we’re a district that spans multiple cities and neighborhoods, rules can vary depending on where you are. A quick check with your city or local law enforcement agency can help you understand how this might impact your student’s commute to and from school.
We enjoy seeing students out in the community, building independence and enjoying the ride to and from school. As this trend continues to grow, so does the importance of understanding how to ride safely and responsibly. We appreciate our families for helping reinforce safe choices along the way. Our goal is simple: students arrive home just as safe as when they left for school.
