To the #1LISD Community,

At Wednesday’s special-called meeting, Leander ISD Board of Trustees approved the consolidation of one of our elementary campuses. Public discussion, staff work and community engagement led to a moment none of us wanted to consider. I want to start off by thanking the many families, students and staff members who showed up, made their voices heard and asked tough questions. Civic engagement matters, and your input shaped this process.

I also want to recognize our staff and campus leaders. Over the past several months, they have spent long nights in meetings, weekends preparing materials and countless hours working through complex scenarios—often at the expense of time with their own families. They did this not because it was easy, but because they care deeply about this district and the students we serve. Their professionalism and commitment deserve acknowledgment.

Let me be clear: school consolidations are not anyone’s preference. They are the result of a public education system that continues to be asked to do more with less. Texas has not meaningfully increased per-student funding in years, despite rising costs, growing expectations and a rapidly changing educational landscape. Until that changes, districts across the state are forced to make difficult, sometimes painful decisions simply to remain financially responsible.

With the Board’s action complete, our focus now turns to implementation, supporting students, families and staff through a thoughtful transition. That work includes planning around staffing, facilities and student supports, and it is already happening for the campuses directly affected.

We have clarity on one decision, yet we still face great challenge. Leander ISD is struggling to close an estimated $13 million budget gap, driven largely by the state’s failure to keep pace with the real costs of educating students. We need you to continue being a partner, engaged in what’s happening, share information and advocate for the resources our schools need. The long-term stability of our district depends on it.

Thank you. I am grateful for the thoughtful engagement and the care you bring. May the holiday season bring you rest, joy and peace.
