Leander Independent School District announces that Trustee Francesca Romans has decided to resign from the Leander ISD Board of Trustees. The Board is expected to accept her resignation during a special-called meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 28.
“Francesca’s heart for people has always guided her leadership,” said Board President Anna Smith. “She leads with compassion, listens deeply and keeps students at the center of every decision. We’re grateful for the time, energy and care she’s poured into Leander ISD, and we wish her all the best as she begins this next chapter.”
Romans, who was elected to the Board in 2022, has served #1LISD with commitment and integrity, championing initiatives that support student growth and wellbeing, staff excellence and community engagement. During her tenure, she represented the Board with the Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF), the Districtwide Educational Improvement Council and an Educational Access Ambassador. She also provided vital support in community partnerships, budget planning and student health.
During her time on the board, the District passed a $762.8 million bond package to renovate schools and build new facilities like the Geiger Compass Center and breaking ground on an early childhood center. Moreover, Romans served when Leander ISD earned recognition as AP Large District of the Year.
In her message to the community, Romans shared the following reflection:
“Being a public school board trustee is an immense responsibility, and this role has given me opportunities to advocate, to celebrate, to learn and to learn to do better. I have had the privilege to attend professional learning sessions and curriculum meetings, speak up for public education at the Capitol and stand on the field for marching band awards. I have watched new facilities come to life, cheered on students at countless events and congratulated more than 10,000 LISD graduates, including the extraordinary honor of handing diplomas to my own son and my sister.
My deepest appreciation goes to the educators and staff who teach and care for our kids. You go above and beyond every single day, and I am so grateful to have learned from you. The work you do is incredible and overwhelming, and the joy and dedication you bring to it make all the difference. Thank you for always answering questions, walking through data and welcoming me into your classrooms and offices. You have made me a better advocate, a better professional and especially a better mom.
It has been an absolute privilege to serve the #1LISD community, and while it has become necessary for me to step back from this role for health reasons, I am excited to continue my involvement here as a parent and an advocate, and I look forward to supporting this Board as they continue their work.”
Regarding filling the vacancy, the Board has the authority to appoint a member to serve out the remainder of Roman’s term or to call a special election. The next steps will be determined by the Board in accordance with district policy and applicable legal guidelines. Policy BBC (Legal) outlines the process for Trustee resignations and provides the framework for how vacancies may be addressed. The Board will consider its options and take appropriate action at an upcoming meeting.
