The Board of Trustees reviewed new course proposals for the 2020–21 school year, considered the multiple ways the district supports continuous staff improvement and received a construction update at the Nov. 21 Board meeting.

Review the entire agenda

Trustees review potential new course offerings for 2020–21 school year

Upon approval by the Board, several new course offerings could be included as options in the Course Catalog next year. Student interest will determine if the course is included in the campus master schedules.

The following courses are being submitted for board consideration:

  • AP Physics I
  • Chamber Ensemble
  • Cybersecurity Capstone
  • Practicum in Law, Safety, Corrections and Securities
  • Practicum in Audio Visual Production
  • Practicum in Graphic Design and Illustration
  • Practicum in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Principles of Architecture

“We want to make sure students are not limited in the classes they take because it’s not a ‘ranked’ class,” Trustee Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia said. ”A different discussion may be to look at the GPA policy to see what we’re weighting and what we include in advance credit. My concern is students don’t take classes they’re interested in because it’s the ugly GPA weight game. So they’re not taking higher-level courses, even if it’s tied to a certification and field they want to go into because of the weight policy.”

Continuous improvement continues to be a focus at Leander ISD

Staff from the Department of Teaching and Learning shared multiple efforts to continue the district’s focus on continuous improvement, leadership development and professional learning communities.

Danielson Middle School visit highlights construction project review

LISD is in the design phase for summer construction projects, which will touch all middle schools – in the form of secure vestibules and HVAC replacement – and high schools except for Leander High School.

Construction on Danielson Middle School, the district’s ninth middle school, continues apace. Mark Koller, the school’s newly announced principal, and other district staff had the chance to tour the grounds this week.

This school – with a large, open common area in the middle of the campus and wings of classrooms designed for collaboration – will welcome its first batch of students during the 2020–21 school year.
