To the Leander ISD community:
Our hearts are heavy. Over the past several days, many in our community have faced unimaginable loss and disruption due to the catastrophic flooding across Central Texas. Whether your family experienced the loss of a loved one, damage to your home, was forced to evacuate, or is simply grappling with the emotional toll of these events, please know that you are not alone. We see you, we care about you, and we are here to support you. And we continue to pray for the safe rescue and recovery of those who are still missing.
Even while school is not in session, our commitment to care and connection remains strong. District and campus leaders have been actively working behind the scenes to check on families, coordinate with local agencies, and assist in community response efforts. I am deeply grateful for the many staff members who have reached out and helped ensure that students and families in need are not navigating this moment alone.
If you have a family member missing due to the recent flooding, please contact the American Red Cross at 800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) for assistance. The Red Cross also has a free, 24-hour support hotline set up at 800-985-5990 to speak with a trained mental health professional.
The county sheriff’s offices have also asked that residents needing assistance call the non-emergency numbers for the Sheriff’s Offices in both counties:
- Williamson County Sheriff’s Office: 512-864-8282
- Travis County Sheriff’s Office: 512-974-0845, then dial 3
These lines are open to help connect families with available resources while a dedicated support number is being set up.
We have been asked how our community can help those in need. The City of Leander has put together a helpful list of places accepting donations.
With additional rainfall in the forecast, we encourage all families to closely follow updates from county officials and the National Weather Service. We strongly urge all residents to register at WarnCentralTexas.org to receive real-time emergency alerts that can help keep you and your family safe during disasters. Your safety – and the safety of our entire community – remains our top priority.
In Leander ISD, we are one community. And in difficult times like these, it is our compassion, our generosity and our willingness to show up for one another that define who we are. We will continue to update you as additional resources become available, and we will walk together through the recovery ahead.
With care and gratitude,
Bruce Gearing, Ed.D.
