Leander ISD sixth-grade social studies teachers helped launch a program that partners local social studies teachers with the Environmental Science and Conservation department of Concordia University Texas and the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center.

The program encourages geography outdoor education (GEO) through the use of geographic information systems. Equipped with binoculars and game cameras, four LISD teachers practiced exploring the Concordia campus and used nature apps to determine the impact of development on the natural habitat of species.

The participating 6th grade teachers are:

  • Kiann Betancourt and Amy Ballard from CRMS
  • Brittney Phan SMS
  • Sara Killian LMS
  • Ashley Young WMS

“We hope to use the geography outdoor learning to provide enrichment opportunities to our students,” said Social Studies Facilitator, Amy Pokorney. “This is a great way for continued learning practices to impact their classrooms.”

This spring, teachers and a handful of students will have the opportunity to participate in a field study, using the equipment provided by Concordia.
