This fall, Leander ISD launched a series of โ€œEmpowering Parentsโ€ engagement opportunities. The sessions were held in each region of the district, starting with Danielson Middle School in the north, Vandegrift High School in the south, and the Support Services Building in Cedar Park.

To keep the community informed, LISD provided an update on the new police departmentโ€™s development. In addition, these meetings provided a platform for community members, allowing them to share ideas about the vision and mission for the police departmentโ€™s formation.

Speakers highlighted initiatives and programs within Leander ISD to enhance school safety, security, health, and wellness.

Key sections of the presentation included:

  1. Safety and Security
    • Introduction of a proposed ISD Police Department to align with House Bill 3 requirements.
    • Training requirements for Peace Officers vs. School Marshals.
  2. Emergency Management
    • Access control protocols: mandatory visitor sign-ins and prevention of door propping.
    • Drills (lockdowns, evacuation, shelter) ensure readiness and compliance.
    • Use of tools like the Centegix Crisis Alert system for quick response.
  3. Student Support Services
    • The School Behavioral Threat Assessment Team (SBTAT) identifies and responds to threats.
    • Definitions of bullying
  4. Health Services
    • School nurses deliver student-centered care, addressing physical, mental, and social health needs.
    • Programs include AED deployment, opioid overdose response training, and trauma kits on all campuses.
  5. Counseling Services
    • Focus on academic, career, and social-emotional development through individual/group support.
    • Licensed counselors work with families, identify student needs, and respond to crises.

In addition to presentations, attendees had an opportunity to participate in a live, open ThoughtExchange to share their thoughts and insights.

Following these meetings, a virtual session will be scheduled in January to allow the public to process the collected feedback and address any additional questions. By that time, the district hopes to provide more clarity regarding Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) licensing and the next steps in the police departmentโ€™s development.

LISD encourages all community members to attend and contribute to these important discussions as the district works toward enhancing safety and support for its students and families. Your voice matters in shaping the future of our communityโ€™s safety initiatives!
