Canyon Ridge Middle School faculty continued a 13-year tradition by sewing 130 jackets for needy students in Leander ISD.
The coat drive started during the 2004–05 school year and was inspired by an eighth-grade student, whose mother would sew jackets on her birthday. She would sew one jacket for every year since her birth and donate the coats to kids in need. The next year, the faculty began meeting once a week to sew jackets. Dedicated educators have carried on the tradition ever since, donating to students throughout Central Texas, including this year.
“It was really a heartwarming day,” said Canyon Ridge principal Susan Sullivan. The students were so happy to be in the warm, snuggly coats. This is really our way to give back through community service.”
