Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students from 22 elementary schools met at Cox Elementary School for the annual Battle of the Bluebonnets. Student teams answered 40 questions from the 20 titles of books.

The Battle of the Bluebonnets was established in 2005 to celebrate the efforts and achievements of LISD students who participate in the Texas Bluebonnet Program. These students have voluntarily spent countless hours reading many, and in some cases, ALL of the nominated Bluebonnet books.

Leander ISD Librarians sponsor this event to encourage and celebrate voluntary reading by bringing students from across Leander ISD to share what they learned from the booklist choices this past year.

The Texas Bluebonnet Award reading program, sponsored by the Texas Library Association, was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children in third through sixth grade to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination and identify their favorite book. The award process provides librarians, teachers, parents, and writers with insight into young students’ reading preferences. It further affords an opportunity to honor and encourage imaginative authors who create books with high appeal to children.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in this year’s Battle of the Bluebonnets!
