Like hundreds of other high school students in Leander ISD, Aarohie Nimje enjoys spending time with her family and friends, creating art, reading, and dancing. But Aarohie is also one of only 267 students in the district who are on track to graduate with both their high school diploma and an associate degree at the same time.

This is the opportunity that Leander ISD’s Early College High School (ECHS) provides. Thanks to the district’s partnership with Austin Community College (ACC), scholars enrolled in ECHS are able to earn an associate degree tuition-free before they even walk the stage at their high school graduation, preparing them to continue their higher education journey or for anything else they want to pursue. ECHS is located at the ACC San Gabriel campus in Leander. Scholars are taught their high school classes by LISD teachers and their college courses by ACC professors.

Nimje was an eighth grader at Henry Middle School when she first heard about ECHS, which was recruiting for its legacy class back in 2021. “Getting experience in a college class, 60 high school credits, AND an associate’s degree seemed like a total dream,” Nimje said. “That and creating a student-led legacy at this school was an amazing idea that I really wanted to be a part of. The first time I saw the application, I immediately and excitedly told my parents about it. Before I knew it, I was accepted and was attending their informational sessions and interviews.”

Early College High School is an option available to all eighth graders in Leander ISD. Nimje says that while the school is rigorous, the time and effort invested is well worth it. “ECHS is a really good opportunity for people who want to strengthen their resume for college, gain experience, and improve important life skills such as time management, organization, and stress management.”

While ECHS scholars are not offered UIL activities, they enjoy student-led clubs and organizations, a close-knit community of like-minded peers, and several social events throughout the year. “I’m gaining so much experience as a college student and a high school student, and I never feel as if I am missing out on the ‘high school experience,’” Nimje said. “What makes Early College High School unique and special is that it’s student-led, and every student’s needs and interests are seen and met.”

In addition to support from their fellow scholars, Nimje says the support and guidance ECHS students receive from their teachers makes a difference. “This is a small school, and we are so tight-knit, it’s like we’re a giant family. The staff and teachers are so friendly and supportive, and we are able to create a community built on wholesome bonds and student connections.”

At ECHS, Nimje appreciates how school administrators allow students to voice their opinions and shape their school experience. “At ECHS, I feel seen and heard. Our voice here truly matters, and I never feel uncomfortable speaking my concerns or proposing ideas to the administration. ECHS has endless resources and support, through their staff and their opportunities.”

Being a high school student while also working toward an associate degree makes for a very busy schedule, but over time and with the skills she’s gained over the years as an ECHS student, Nimje says she’s been able to get into a good rhythm. “Balancing ACC and ECHS is not difficult, but it does take time to ease into the lifestyle and rigor,” she said. “As a junior, I feel more comfortable with my schedule, and my time management skills have also improved.”

While academics are a big part of her life, Nimje also values her personal, family, and self-care time. In addition, she is also part of a dance academy, where she performs in various recitals year-round. Even with her busy schedule, Nimje is able to apply what she has learned in school to balance her time. “At ECHS, we are required to take AVID as an elective, and it has been the biggest help throughout my high school years so far,” Nimje said. “I have learned so many life skills in academics and personal growth. I have used these skills when researching for college, doing personal projects, volunteering, and managing my time.”

Now halfway through her junior year, Nimje is beginning to think about the future. As of now, she hopes to attend a four-year university in Texas and major in biomedical science. “In all honesty, ECHS is the best preparation for college and future goals. The environment at ECHS is set up for student success. I really do feel successful here and ready to take on what’s next in my journey.”
