After 11 years as Leander ISD’s director of state assessment, accountability and academic measures, Brenda Cruz will transition to the role of assistant superintendent of empowered learning. The Board of Trustees approved her position at Thursday’s meeting.

“I am delighted to announce Brenda Cruz as our new assistant superintendent of empowered learning,” said Superintendent, Bruce Gearing, Ed.D. “Throughout her career in LISD, Brenda has built strong relationships and partnerships with principals, and I look forward to seeing her work alongside these leaders as she guides them in empowering students to prepare themselves for anything.”

Cruz has an extensive background in educational administration at Leander ISD, having served as principal of Grandview Hills Elementary School and assistant principal of Cedar Park Middle School and Winkley Elementary School. During her time as director of state assessment, accountability and academic measures, Cruz led the development and expansion of a Community-Based Accountability System for the district. In 2024, she co-led the statewide 2024 Texas Public Accountability Consortium design team. In addition, she developed and conducted professional learning aligned to state assessment, accountability, and strategic application of data for campuses and the district.

“I am elated for this new role in Leander ISD, and I look forward to the opportunity to partner with staff, students and parents to empower all of us on our learning journey,” Cruz said. “Learning is limitless, and each of us is empowered to own our learning, as well as help others navigate the opportunities before them. It is an exciting time and future for all of us, and I am honored to be a part of the Leander ISD learning community.”

Cruz completed her undergraduate studies at Southwest Texas State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. She went on to receive a master’s degree in educational administration from Texas State University.
