Opened in the fall of 2002, Leander ISD’s 11th elementary school — Laura Welch Bush Elementary School — is named after Laura Welch Bush, a former public school teacher, librarian and first lady of the United States.

Mrs. Bush was born in Midland and attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas before earning her master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin. As first lady from 2001 to 2009, she became an advocate for education and literacy, and Mrs. Bush continues to do so through her own foundations such as the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries.
