Leander High School junior Avery Larson takes a strand of the mannequin’s hair and curls it into a perfect ringlet. She moves with precision, creating curl after curl that will eventually turn into a completed class assignment β€” an elegant updo featuring stand-up pin curls.

Before joining the Leander ISD Cosmetology program, Larson thought about one day pursuing a career in computer-aided design. That was after her original dream of becoming a hairstylist like her grandmother faded over time. Now, being in the cosmetology program has reignited that childhood dream. β€œThis class has helped me realize that hairstyling is my talent and the profession that brings me joy,” Larson said. β€œCTE programs like cosmetology are crucial to LISD because they allow students to get their license before they even graduate high school.”

Beyond the classroom instruction and hands-on skills the students learn, Larson says the program has taught her about life beyond high school. β€œThis program, and my teacher Ms. Dudley, have taught me many things about the workforce outside of high school and how to properly navigate it,” Larson said. β€œI’ve learned so much about accountability, dependability, and responsibility.”

In addition to working towards a Texas cosmetologist license, the students in the program build valuable friendships and support each other along the way. β€œMy favorite part about cosmetology, specifically Ms.Dudley’s program, is that we as a class are one,” Larson said. β€œThere’s never a dull moment in our class even during Theory. We laugh, joke, and still accomplish a lot. Ms. Dudley makes our space a very safe place.”

The program includes student service time, in which the students can practice the skills they’ve learned with each other. Cedar Park High School junior Madison Monroe says that student service time is her favorite part of the class. β€œI think it is important for Leander to offer CTE programs like this because it allows students to get hands-on experience in their desired field of work, create connections with people, and expand students’ horizons on what field of work they can go into. This class is helping me create my own path for the future,” Monroe said.

Cosmetology is just one Career & Technical Education (CTE) endorsement that Leander ISD students can pursue under the Human Services Program of Study. Learn more about CTE in Leander ISD here
