School building closures have flung the doors wide open for student creativity! Since March, the Leander ISD Council of PTAs has hosted a weekly “Unexpected Art Contest”. Dozens of LISD students have flexed their imagination–painting, drawing, taking pictures or writing a poem.
Each week, organizers come up with a theme. Students have all week to work on their pieces and submit for judging by Friday night. The judging committee consists of art teachers to artists, even some from out of state. After announcing a winner from four different levels the following Sunday, students can compete all over again with a new theme.
“We try hard to decide on themes that appeal to all students in K-12,” Leander ISD Council of PTAs president Kathleen Schoening said. “The art that has been submitted so far has been amazing and judging is difficult. There is so much talent within Leander ISD.”
Schoening said the goal behind the contest is to keep students engaged and encouraged.
Congratulations to our winning artists of the theme “Green”:
This week’s theme is ‘Bout the Books!
