What started as an idea to connect students across campuses turned into a powerful, student-led event serving the entire community.

On April 11, health science students from all six comprehensive high schools came together at Cedar Park High School to host the first-ever District Outreach Convention (DOC), a collaborative effort designed to inspire interest in healthcare careers and promote community wellness.

The vision was simple but ambitious: unite all HOSA chapters across Leander ISD for one large-scale service project, while giving each campus the opportunity to showcase what makes their program unique. Through the event, students aimed to spark curiosity about careers in medicine and public health, while also increasing awareness around personal health.

Inside the convention, each HOSA chapter hosted interactive booths highlighting opportunities available through the organization, from volunteer service and scholarships to competitions and leadership development. Attendees also had the chance to connect with local healthcare partners, including Concordia University’s College of Health Sciences, the College of Healthcare Professions, the Texas chapter of the National Kidney Foundation, the ACC Phlebotomy Program, Longhorn EMS and more.

Behind the scenes, the event was months in the making.

“Student-led events require a lot of time, effort, dedication and external support to bring them from an idea on paper to something real,” said Saron Amsalu, executive vice president of the Vandegrift HOSA chapter and one of the event’s organizers. “But these experiences help students build the essential communication and interpersonal skills they’ll need as future leaders. Showing students it’s possible to organize such a large community event like the DOC, with little prior experience or references beyond an event outline and a dream, can inspire them to pursue their own passions and goals.”

After eight months of planning, the students’ vision became a reality. And it’s only the beginning.

Student organizers are already looking ahead to next year’s convention, with hopes of growing the event and welcoming even more community members to be part of the experience.
