Every March, Leander ISD recognizes National Athletic Training Month with the purpose of honoring students dedicated to the health and safety of our student-athletes. #1LISD is featuring two athletic trainers as our Student-Athletes of the Week during the month–one from every high school campus. We are excited to applaud the contributions of these outstanding students

Student-Athlete of the Week Emma Heidkamp
Emma Heidkamp, Rouse High School

You can count on Emma Heidkamp! Since she was a freshman, the Rouse High School junior has participated in the sports medicine program. While this year she is specifically working with the football and track programs, Emma has supported almost all of the sports offered at Rouse HS! She takes a genuine interest in the well-being of her assigned teams and finds a way to help them be successful.

Emma doesn’t just watch and wait on the action. Notably, as a long-time competitor, she races with the National Hot Rod Association and International Hot Rod Association Junior Drag Racing Programs!

“Emma has shown amazing grit this year and has done so without losing her jovial personality. She will take the initiative to problem solve. Then, she’ll come to you with a solution and a laugh to share! Emma has brought a brightness to our program and we feel lucky to have her.” Rouse HS athletic trainer Miranda Gafford stated.

Since middle school, Emma participated in AVID. Previously, she raised livestock with Future Farmers of America (FFA).

Her view from the top is looking mighty fine! Vista Ridge High School’s Mikayla Martinez takes her role as a leader seriously. The senior student-athletic trainer earned the position of co-head athletic trainer for the Ranger football team this year. That’s not all. Mikayla also heads student-athletic training for the boys and girls track & field teams, serving in the same role supporting the boys and girls basketball programs.

In addition to sports medicine, Mikayla is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She has made the honor roll all four years of high school, including A honor roll her senior year. Mikayla also participated with Vista Ridge HS’ Incubator/Accelerator program.

“I would describe Mikayla as a blessing to our program,” Vista Ridge HS athletic trainer Jose Carillo said. “I nominated her because she understands people, listens well, and does an excellent job serving her community. She is a great young lady who has improved every year.”
