Vandegrift High School senior Maura Connors is the Leander ISD Fine Arts Student of the Week.

Maura is the Alto 2 section leader for both the Chamber and Chorale Choirs at VHS, as well as choir president for the 2022-2023 school year. She received the Vandegrift Choir’s Musicianship Award during her time in both non-varsity and varsity choirs and will be performing with the Chamber choir at the National American Choral Directors Association convention, as well as at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention with the Chorale Tenor-Bass in 2023.

“Maura is a strong leader and singer,” Choir Director Michael Zook said. “She cares about what she is doing every day, and the people she is charged with leading.”

As a mezzo-soprano, Maura has been chosen as a finalist for Vandegrift Choir’s Solo Contest every year from 2020 until 2022, winning the contest in 2021. Outside of school, Maura placed third in the 2020 Texoma NATS vocal competition and was a semi-finalist in 2021. In the Concordia High School Young Voices competition, she was a finalist in 2021 and placed third in 2022. She won the 2021 South Texas NATS vocal competition and recently was a finalist in the Schmidt Vocal Competition, receiving an encouragement award.

Maura has made region choir for the past six years, making first chair in 2018, 2021, and in 2022. Participating in the All-State process, Maura has made the All-State Treble Choir in 2020 and the All-State Mixed Choir in 2021.
