Leander ISD welcomes Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez, Ed.D., as the district’s Chief of Schools. The LISD Board of Trustees approved the decision Thursday during its Board meeting. In this role, Dr. Gutierrez will strengthen the student learning experience by providing collaboration and oversight to the area superintendent team as they coach campus principals and ensure safe learning environments by leading the student services team.

“Dr. Gutierrez brings a unique combination of supervisory experience – as a principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent – along with a strong instructional background and knowledge to the role of Chief of Schools,” LISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing, Ed.D., said. “With tried and tested leadership abilities, I believe his blended perspective and collaborative approach will enhance our Cabinet team. I am thrilled with the opportunity to work with him as we empower student learning in #1LISD.”

During his six years of service as superintendent, Dr. Gutierrez earned the distinction of Region 20 Superintendent of the Year. Prior to his leadership in Seguin ISD, he served as assistant superintendent at Plano ISD and in various roles within the executive leadership team at Little Elm ISD. He started his career as a middle school English Language Arts teacher at Northside ISD.

“I am absolutely thrilled and honored to embark on this exciting journey with Leander ISD as Chief of Schools,” Dr. Gutierrez said. “I will work in close partnership with our area superintendents and Student Support Services team, bringing my experience and strong commitment in furthering our mission of educational excellence and student success to ‘produce the most sought-after creators of our future world.'”

Dr. Gutierrez earned his undergraduate degree from Angelo State University and his master’s degree from Schreiner University. In 2016, he successfully completed the educational doctorate program at Texas Tech University-Lubbock, receiving his Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership.

Dr. Gutierrez replaces Sarah Grissom, Ed.D., who became the district’s Chief of Staff in May. He will start his position on October 2.
