Leander ISD Superintendent Dan Troxell, Ph.D., announced Matthew Calkins as the new principal of Deer Creek Elementary School Monday, April 30.

“Please join me in welcoming Matt Calkins to Leander ISD as the newest principal of Deer Creek Elementary,” Troxell said. “Matt is an energetic leader who has a history of improving student achievement by partnering with staff and parents. His dynamic leadership style will only enhance the incredible learning environment at Deer Creek Elementary.”

Calkins began his teaching career in 1994 as a high school English, gifted and talented, and journalism teacher in Houston ISD. In 2005, he continued teaching high school English in Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, before later becoming an AVID coordinator and assistant principal at the middle school level in the same school district. Calkins currently serves as the principal of Fort Stockton Intermediate School in Fort Stockton ISD, where he has been since 2016.

“My family is thrilled for the opportunity to join and serve the students and community of Leander ISD,” Calkins said. “We are extremely impressed by the stakeholders’ earnest desire to support the opportunities and increased achievement of each student. I cannot wait to begin working for the students and families of Leander ISD as the district continues to provide exceptional academic experiences and resources. Most importantly, I cannot wait to meet the students, staff and parents of Deer Creek Elementary. Go Colts!”
