Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The information below will help you learn more about safe and responsible gun ownership.
Practicing safe gun storage protects children, prevents accidents, and keeps guns out of unauthorized hands. Follow the three steps below to practice safe gun storage and to keep your loved ones safe:
- Store firearms: Store unloaded and secured by using a trigger lock, biometric lock, gun case, strong box, gun cabinet, or gun safe.Β
- Store Ammunition: Store and lock ammunition safely.Β
- Restrict Access: Keep others from getting access to stored firearms 24/7. That includes family, friends, and visitors.Β
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has put together a guide for parents to help them talk to their children or other parents about gun safety. There is also a guide outlining safe gun storage devices.
Leander ISD encourages all members of our community to take these precautions seriously. The safety of our students, staff, families and our community is a top priority, and responsible gun ownership plays a critical role in protecting our loved ones.
