With a strong focus on student excellence, Monica de la Garza-Conness will lead Bagdad Elementary as its newest principal. The Leander Board of Trustees approved the recommendation Thursday night.

“Please join me in welcoming Monica de la Garza-Conness as the new principal for Bagdad Elementary,” Superintendent Bruce Gearing, Ed.D., said. “Monica is a passionate leader who advocates for each and every student she serves. As a bilingual educator, her strong instructional knowledge and belief in collaboration with all stakeholders will only enhance the incredible culture of growth at Bagdad Elementary.”

De la Garza-Conness began her career in education as a math and ESL teacher at Jim Barnes Middle School in Seguin ISD. She moved into leadership as an assistant principal at Austin ISD’s Sadler Means Young Women’s Academy. As a principal at Martin Middle School and as a school improvement facilitator with the district, de la Garza-Conness made building relationships with families and the community a priority.

“I am honored and humbled to be given this opportunity; I look forward to becoming part of the amazing Bobcat family,” de la Garza-Conness said. “I am eager to work alongside the talented and dedicated staff to serve the students, parents, and community of Bagdad Elementary. Go Bobcats!”

De la Garza-Conness graduated from Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. She earned a master’s degree in Education Administration from Concordia University.

#Bobcatpride should expect de la Garza-Conness to join students and staff on Monday, February 15. At that time, outgoing Bagdad Elementary principal Christy Hilbun’s assignment will become official. Hilbun will lead the district’s newest campus Nancy Tarvin Elementary as the school’s principal. Tarvin ES is scheduled to open this fall, serving families in the north of our district.
