Two bright minds came together to help others clouded in darkness. We’re celebrating Vandegrift High School juniors Reina Degollado and Shelby Wall as Leander ISD CTE Students of the Week!
Reina and Shelby joined Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The organization’s competitive events allow students to apply their Family and Consumer Sciences education to real-world experiences.
To showcase their skills, Reina and Shelby hosted a glow-in-the-dark fun run, Glow On Fun Run, last November. The event helped in two ways: a fundraiser for scholarships for teens affected by mental health illnesses and as part of their FCCLA Star Event. Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) competitive events give students the chance to feature their leadership skills and career readiness.
Through the fun run, Reina and Shelby were able to donate $10,000 to the Quell Foundation, a nonprofit that awards scholarships to teens who are affected by mental health illnesses and seeking the treatment they need and college education. The amount raised helped fund eight $1,250 scholarships, which were awarded in February.
“Shelby and Reina are mindful, thoughtful and ‘doers’,” Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Deanna Bentley said. “The fun run was a huge undertaking and they knocked it out of the park–an amazing accomplishment that will impact so many students with the scholarship money they raised!”
Aglow with brilliant ideas turned into action, way to go Leander ISD CTE Students of the Week Reina and Shelby!
