The majority of Leander ISD voters opposed Proposition A in the November 3 election, leaving the district’s Maintenance & Operations (M&O) tax rate at its previously adopted level.

The outcome means Leander ISD will not receive the approximately $6.7 million in additional annual operating revenue the proposed three-cent tax rate increase would have generated after state recapture.

Proposition A

  • Against: 47,863 (55.25%)
  • For: 38,772 (44.75%)

“We appreciate our community’s participation in this election and respect the outcome,” said Leander ISD Superintendent Chris Clark, Ed.D. “It is our administrative team’s responsibility to listen to the community and make fiscally responsible decisions while protecting the student experience as much as possible.”

Proposition A was called by the Board of Trustees as one option to help address the district’s financial challenges. Without the additional revenue, district leadership will continue evaluating financial projections, potential spending reductions, and operational adjustments as part of its ongoing budget planning.

Board President Anna Smith acknowledged the election outcome in the context of broader conversations about public education.

“Across the state, we’re seeing signs of renewed hope for public education, and that’s encouraging,” Smith said. “Here at home, we’ve elected three new members to our Board of Trustees, but the defeat of Proposition A is a tough pill to swallow. We respect the decision of our voters and recognize the difficult financial choices ahead. As we look toward the next legislative session, we’ll continue advocating for our public schools and holding our elected officials accountable for the decisions they make about public education funding.”
