Leander ISD is seeking feedback from our families as part of our annual evaluation of potentially hazardous walking routes for students living within 2 miles of their school.
Under state guidelines, school districts receive transportation funding for students who live more than 2 miles from school. As a result, LISD uses this 2-mile distance as a baseline for bus eligibility, commonly referred to as the Not Eligible for Transportation Zone (NET Zone). However, the district recognizes that some walking routes within that zone may present safety concerns, and these areas are reviewed each year as part of this process.
Using a Board-approved and community-created matrix, the district transportation staff evaluate factors such as traffic patterns, road conditions and the availability of things like sidewalks. Routes that meet the criteria then qualify for bus services, even if they are within 2 miles of the campus.
Community input is an important part of this review. Families who believe a specific route may be hazardous are encouraged to share their feedback through this online form. Note: If a family has students attending multiple campuses, a separate form should be submitted for each school.
The feedback window will remain open through Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, allowing time for staff to review submissions before final determinations are made for the upcoming school year.
